Chinese Medicine Practitioner in Melbourne
About Dr. Max Ma
About Me

Chinese medicine is often approached as a collection of treatments. In clinical practice, however, it is first and foremost a system of understanding the body.
The effectiveness of any treatment depends less on how much is done, and more on whether the underlying pattern is accurately identified.
I am Dr Max Ma. Before entering the field of Chinese medicine, I worked as a senior technical specialist in the high-tech industry. My transition into this field was not incidental, but driven by a long-standing interest in understanding health from a more fundamental perspective.
Since 2004, I have been engaged in the study of Chinese medicine, initially through independent learning, and later through formal training and clinical practice. Over time, my focus has centred on classical herbal medicine, acupuncture, and diagnostic systems such as pulse, tongue, and abdominal assessment.
My clinical training has included study under multiple experienced practitioners in China, followed by formal qualifications in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in New Zealand. These experiences have shaped a practice that places strong emphasis on accurate diagnosis and individualised treatment.
I am currently based in Melbourne, where I work between my private studio and collaborative clinic settings. This allows me to engage with a diverse range of patients while maintaining a consistent clinical approach. My aim is to make Chinese medicine more accessible, while preserving the depth and precision that define its practice.
Why My Approach Is Different
My clinical work is centred on accurate diagnosis as the foundation of effective treatment. I place particular emphasis on pulse, tongue, and abdominal assessment, using these methods to identify underlying patterns rather than relying on symptom-based approaches.
In many cases, ineffective treatment is not due to a lack of intervention, but a lack of diagnostic precision.
Over the course of my practice, I have refined my own diagnostic framework, integrating traditional principles with clinical experience. This allows for a more precise understanding of each patient’s condition, especially in complex or long-standing cases. In practice, a clear diagnosis often reduces the need for excessive or repeated treatment.
In treatment, I prioritise the use of classical Chinese herbal formulas (Jing Fang), which have been preserved for over two thousand years. These formulas are characterised by their simplicity, precision, and clear therapeutic direction — often using a minimal number of herbs to achieve targeted therapeutic effects.
Rather than focusing solely on immediate symptom relief, my approach combines treatment with structured adjustments in lifestyle, diet, and physical habits. The aim is to support long-term balance, while addressing the underlying causes of dysfunction.
My clinical focus includes chronic internal conditions, pain management, and hormonal or gynecological disorders, particularly in cases where conventional approaches have provided limited results.

After spending a decade in New Zealand, my family and I relocated to Melbourne, where we began a new phase of life. I am a father of two, and family remains an important part of my daily rhythm.
Outside of clinical work, I maintain a range of personal interests, including reading, outdoor activities, and diving. In recent years, my focus has gradually shifted towards more contemplative practices such as tea appreciation, incense rituals, meditation, and Chinese Qigong.
These practices are not separate from my work, but form a quiet extension of it — shaping how I perceive balance, rhythm, and the subtle dynamics that govern the human body.
This perspective continues to shape how I approach clinical work — particularly in cases that require a more careful and individualised understanding.
